What ensues is one of the best ten minutes of television I've seen since Breaking Bad, as Jimmy attempts to talk himself out of certain death only to be rescued by the intervention of a much calmer, much less insane gangster named Nacho. Unfortunately, this time Tuco and his minions take the three of them out into the desert, where we're privy once again to the beautiful blue, cloud-swept skies of New Mexico-a hallmark of Breaking Bad. Which made me want to hit them again with a quad-based walking cane. One thing leads to another, and just as he's about to extract the two skaters from Tuco's clutches, one of them starts blabbing about how it's all Jimmy's fault. (He's calmest and kindest around his family, you may recall.)Īs Tuco cleans up the mess, Jimmy shows up. As the show is about to end, it's clear that not only is it on the same level, but it's stood out as its own story.īetter Call Saul season 6 will premiere on AMC on April 18th, 2022.Which, as it happens, is precisely what Tuco does as soon as his abuela is out of sight. Many were skeptical if Better Call Saul would ever be put in the same league as Breaking Bad when it first started. Seeing where these characters end up compared to where they were when the show started also helps its rewatchability too. Legitimate change in a person is not immediate, but gradual. That's what makes Better Call Saul rival its predecessor Breaking Bad in terms of quality - how they've delicately handled their characters' arcs, as each show has made for some of the best storytelling ever displayed on television. His descent was more about him embracing that persona when the world kept telling him that there were no better options. More importantly, it was clear from the get-go that Jimmy always had that Saul Goodman persona in him. This show has expertly demonstrated that it's not one moment that drastically and permanently changes someone. Ever since Better Call Saul started, everyone's been looking for that moment where Jimmy McGill "transformed" into Saul Goodman. The fact that there were so many storylines going into one season continues to disprove the notion that it only takes one moment for someone to go from Point A to Point B. Again, there was way too much material for the show to cover in a 15-minute recap. Then there's Jimmy and Mike working together to get out of the desert with Lalo's bail money. Other minute details include the workers who were constructing the infamous meth lab later seen in Breaking Bad being sent home because of Werner Ziegler's actions, and Nacho gaining Lalo's trust by recovering the drugs even while police were on the verge of seizing them. Now clearly, they couldn't cover *everything* that happened in the show's fifth season, but it's not like they had to. And Mike continues his descent into becoming Gus Fring's right-hand man in his drug operation. Kim, who earlier was a foot soldier for HHM, starts distancing herself more and more from Mesa Verde and Schweikart and Cokely as she turns more to helping those who have nowhere else to turn. For example, Jimmy is finally given the offer he's always wanted to work for Hamlin, Hamlin, and McGill, but because he doesn't want to be in his brother's shadow, not only does he reject it, but he lashes out at Howard. The Better Call Saul recap doesn't only show what went on during the fifth season, but also how different these characters are compared to when the show first started.
